Ever wondered, what is an AED? Find out right here...

The definition of AED

What is an AED? AED stands for Automatic External Defibrillator, a portable and accessible machine designed to detect irregular heartbeat during cardiac arrest and administer a shock treatment to try and gain a regular rhythm again.

A cardiac arrest occurs when a person’s heart has stopped beating normally, they are not breathing and are unresponsive. The AED is programmed to guide a first aider through CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) with verbal or visual prompts and administer an electric shock through the cardiac wall. This allows the sufferer to gain vital treatment time until a paramedic or ambulance arrives. Seconds count during a cardiac arrest and the use of an AED has proven to significantly help with the survival rate and early treatment of a heart condition.

Who can use an AED?

A public access AED can be used by any lay person. Modern devices are intelligent and communicate easy-to-understand instructions, either visually or on the screen advising the rescuer when to commence CPR, how many compressions to make, and when to administer the defibrillation. It makes defibrillation accessible to all, helping to save lives in an emergency.
